These families lived in austere conditions, yet with a deep sense of duty: not only did they ring the bells, but they were the guardians of the city’s rhythm – marking the hours, warning of storms, deaths or fires, and calling the people to prayer. Their lives, almost invisible to history, form an essential part of the spiritual and human legacy of the Seo de Jaca.

The cathedral’s bells are living, resonant testimonies to centuries of history and spirituality. Each one has its own name, a specific function and an unmistakable sound that has accompanied generations of the people of Jacetania, marking celebrations, times of mourning and everyday rituals. Jaca Cathedral is not just stone and art: it is also a memorial to women who, like Countess Doña Sancha, sustained the spiritual heartbeat of the nascent Kingdom of Aragon.

The daughter of King Ramiro I of Aragon, the Infanta Doña Sancha Ramírez was an extraordinary woman: intelligent, cultured and determined, she worked alongside her brother, King Sancho Ramírez, to bring the nascent Kingdom of Aragon into the European fold, promoting the Gregorian Reform and Cluniac monastic life. She exercised her influence from her residences in Jaca, Santa Cruz de la Serós and Siresa, and her power was recognised even by the Pope, when she was appointed administrator of the Bishopric of Pamplona in 1082. She brought up three future kings — Peter I, Alfonso I ‘the Battler’ and Ramiro II ‘the Monk’ — and consolidated the royal and ecclesiastical power of the Kingdom of Aragon.
