Introduction

Welcome to a unique experience in the heart of medieval Plasencia. ‘Plasencia con Alma’ is not just a cultural tour: it is an immersive journey through the history, spirituality and heritage of one of the most important episcopal cities in the western part of the Iberian Peninsula.

Right in the heart of Plasencia’s historic centre, the former Convent of San Ildefonso has opened its doors as an innovative multimedia space where visitors can discover the origins and development of a city deeply shaped by the presence of the Church, the growth of its cathedrals and the splendour of its medieval heritage.

Founded in 1186 by King Alfonso VIII of Castile, Plasencia began as a strategic stronghold between Castile and Extremadura. Just a few years later, in 1190, Pope Clement III canonically established the Diocese of Plasencia, giving rise to a true episcopal city that would grow in the shadow of the Old Cathedral, the founding churches, the convents, the noble palaces and the great medieval market.

Today, centuries later, that historical legacy is being brought back to life thanks to an initiative that combines heritage, emotion and technology.

The experience

During the experience, visitors will explore a space designed for all audiences, where history is brought to life through images and sound. Through audiovisual resources, digital recreations and immersive content, visitors will be able to understand how medieval Plasencia took shape and how the Cathedral, the Bishop’s Palace and the founding churches shaped the city’s urban layout and identity.

El relato de la experiencia estará guiado por una de las grandes protagonistas femeninas de la historia placentina: Doña Leonor de Pimentel, condesa de Plasencia. Su figura permitirá al visitante adentrarse en los acontecimientos, conflictos y transformaciones que marcaron la ciudad durante los siglos finales de la Edad Media. Su voz acompañará al público a través de los diferentes espacios del convento, convirtiéndose en el hilo conductor de una narración cercana, didáctica y emocional.

State-of-the-art technology

The exhibition incorporates state-of-the-art technology to offer an interactive and accessible experience. The multimedia centre features 2D and 3D content, smart signage and digital geonavigators that will enable visitors to discover both the cultural heritage of Plasencia and some of Extremadura’s most spectacular natural landscapes.

Through digital viewpoints and virtual recreations, visitors will be able to explore the historical relationship between the city and its natural surroundings: the Jerte Valley, La Vera, Monfragüe National Park, the Sierra de Gata, Las Hurdes and Tierras de Granadilla, all of which are woven into the narrative as an essential part of Placentia’s identity.

The experience has been designed with an inclusive and accessible approach. The content incorporates resources adapted to aid understanding for people with different cognitive and physical abilities, using clear language, accessible audiovisual formats and technological tools designed to ensure a culture that is open to all.
